Park Road Studio

The intervention of a garage and studio at the rear of a Victorian terrace is not straight forward. Here the context was a typically discordant array of garden outbuildings and mismatched boundary walls and fences. The solution by Andy Atkinson was a simple weatherboarded timber frame, referencing simple industrial and residential Essex structures, distinct from yet harmonising with the Victorian architecture. One single window front and back reference the tripartite Victorian sashes of the house yet bring a crisp modern aesthetic. All details are simple and clean, incorporating sound proportions and high quality materials. From the cat-slide lead dormer roofs to the precast concrete sill, all the components are designed to rest well together.

The building was awarded a conservation area design commendation by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
