Havens
Havens is a remarkable department store building in Hamlet Court Road that was not designated and whose heritage importance had essentially been overlooked. It is one of very few such regional stores still largely intact in its original (or near original) form - most others have modern shop fronts. Build in 1935 the building has unmissable references to the big London stores, especially Heals but also Selfridges and Whitely's. Its dominating faiance clad street facade has double storey height pilasters providing a classically referenced framing of early steel windows, emphasising the intended importance of the large retail store. Overall it has a geometry and detailing with clear Art Deco connotations.
In early 2016 a report was prepared for Historic England and support obtained from the C20 Society. The building was Listed grade II in the Spring of 2016.
Whilst there is an incredible challenge to retailing in the C21, hopefully the retail and architectural heritage of this building can help to support successful, if adapted, retail use.
